Unsung Heroine In Tech
I was never interested in any of the traditional careers such as working as an accountant, a doctor or a lawyer. I wanted to study something that was fun. So, IT seemed a natural course for me. But the real turning point came when I had the opportunity to learn and try RFID.
The technology wasn’t so mature and certainly very expensive back then. However, I got to do lots of experiments in a lab and learnt all about different kinds of labels and sensors that can result in different scanning accuracies. That experience further developed my interest in IT. I discovered it’s not just programming and it’s more about how to adopt different technologies to businesses or help people, and this was a driving force to help me pursue a career in IT.
Now, I’m working as Head of Enterprise Architecture at AS Watson Group. As a female team leader, being detail-minded, patient, more sensitive to people’s feeling and having better communication skills give me an advantage to build a team with warmth and trust. Every day, we work like a family, sharing new technologies and finding innovative ways to solve customers’ pain points. All my teammates are indeed the “unsung heroes”.
I’m happy to see that more women are working in the sector and being trusted and respected. In my own team, women even outnumber men. A clear, open and curious mind is the key to be successful in this role, and being able to embrace teamwork has truly helped me to survive in this ever-evolving IT world, especially as a woman.
