At the Hong Kong Chartered Governance Institute (HKCGI) Corporate Governance Conference 2026, our Group CEO Malina shared how governance can become a catalyst for innovation, trust and growth in a technology-driven world.
Rather than viewing governance as a brake on progress, Malina argued that effective governance provides the clarity, confidence and accountability organisations need to innovate responsibly and move faster.
Drawing on AS Watson's transformation journey, Malina highlighted five lessons for leaders:
1. Start with Customer Problems
Technology should solve real customer needs. Customers are not looking for AI; they want experiences that are easier, faster, more relevant and personalised.
2. AI Is Business Transformation
AI should not be treated as a technology project. Organisations must redesign processes and focus on business outcomes before scaling AI.
3. Trusted Data Builds Trusted AI
As AI adoption grows, data quality, security and transparency become critical. The future winners will not necessarily have the most data, but the most trusted data.
4. Culture Drives Adoption
Technology evolves quickly, but people adopt change more gradually. Sustainable transformation depends on a culture that encourages learning, confidence and new ways of working.
5. Leadership Matters More Than Ever
While AI can analyse information and automate tasks, leaders remain responsible for judgement, trust, accountability and direction. AI amplifies capability; leadership creates impact.
Technology Powered, Human at Heart
During the panel discussion, Malina described AI as a partner rather than a replacement for people. AS Watson's approach focuses on combining human intelligence with artificial intelligence, supported by continuous learning and reskilling across the organisation. And this builds agility.
She concluded that technology alone is no longer a competitive advantage. Success comes from combining technology with trusted governance, strong leadership and an adaptive culture.
"Technology creates possibility. Governance creates trust. Leadership builds culture. Culture unlocks transformation."
